Electric cars and EV charging— is this a chicken or egg conversation, or one we’ve already had and forgotten?
Jason Cortes is a fuel station fanatic with a deep knowledge of more than 100 years of automotive fueling and decades of experience managing fleets that ran on gas, diesel, compressed natural gas (CNG), and— now— electricity. Most recently, Jason was the sales manager for the Rivian Waypoints charging network, and he’s got some great insights on electric charging. The big one? Jason says that, “range anxiety isn’t real.”
Sounds nuts, right? But he says that 2100 internal combustion cars calling AAA every day because they’ve run out of gas make a compelling case against the oft-cited “barriers” to widespread EV adoption being a real thing. But, as he say, we’ve been conditioned through 117 years of liquid-fueled marketing and advertising to trust what’s already there— but someone had this conversation when they built the first “fueling station” in 1905 (decades after the first car was built).
All we need to do now is remember what that conversation was!
We mention Jason’s role as sales manager for the Rivian Waypoints charging network. Rivian Waypoints are branded, Level 2 (220v AC) chargers that the company is planning to put near shopping centers, restaurants, hotels, and parks across the US and Canada— but, despite plans to install 10,000 Waypoints in the next 18 months, it’s been hard to get an exact number of active chargers online today.
Jason talks about range anxiety and the growing number of internal combustion drivers running out of gas on US roads every day— and it’s not just an American problem!— why don’t EV drivers “run out of gas” like this?
We talk about recent efforts by Electrify America and Shell Energy to upgrade their fueling stations and redesign them for longer dwell times. You can read more about that at the links provided.
Jason references Starbucks and other “logos” benefitting from putting EV charging on-site, and Jo muses about a potential future of 100′ tall lighted signs advertising electric vehicle charging— it’s a topic he’s written about before.
We discuss established car dealers and the OEM requirement that they install DC fast-charging stations on-site, which we also discussed in a previous episode of Dealer Digest. You can listen to that one here.
No, Jo’s not hallucinating. There were about 50,000 more gun stores in the US than McDonald’s in 2017 … and that number has held solidly throughout the pandemic.
