Whether it's unending wet weather or sticky summer months, a dehumidifier is what you need to fight mould and keep your home fresh.

If you’ve watched Stan’s hit short series Everything I Know About Love (from Dolly Alderton's best selling book), you will have witnessed the scene where a dodgy landlord tries to convince his twenty-something tenants to accept a very nasty patch of mould on their kitchen ceiling as “bohemian”.

But the young women aren't having a bar of it - mould is a serious health hazard - and the landlord sends his ex-wife to organise a dehumidifier, because it’s “the only thing that gets rid of damp".

While a dehumidifier will not get rid of mould completely and you should get your home checked by professionals if the mould is significant, it does remove the moisture from the air, which helps prevent mould in rainy or humid seasons. So, we've rounded rounded up the best dehumidifiers out there to keep your house as fresh as a daisy, no matter the weather.

This desiccant dehumidifier is great if you need a dehumidifier in the cooler months as well as in summer. An inbuilt Sensair system means you can pick the humidity level you want, and allow the dehumidifier to do the rest. It uses two-stage air filtration, eliminating dust and allergens, and contains silica dioxide crystals to absorb moisture in a non-toxic, environmentally friendly way.

One reviewer comments, “our Sydney apartment suffers from terrible humidity through the winter months. We've tried everything, air circulation, opening the windows as much as possible as well as those moisture sucking granules. Nothing was working properly and so we went nuclear with this bad boy and honestly, it's some of the best $$$ we've ever spent.”

Ausclimate’s desiccant Cool Seasons dehumidifier is perfect for the kind of rainy, freezing, miserable weather Aussie winter brings. Extracting up to 10 litres of moisture per day, this clever thing will help kill bacteria, prevent mould, AND dry your laundry. In winter, this is a great go-to, as it warms up the room slightly, producing a tiny bit of welcome heat as it extracts the moisture.

One reviewer raves, "great product. Best money spent. This has reduced the moisture build up in our cold climate home. The doors are now closing properly and no moisture build up on the windows.”

The ION632 by Ionmax is a desiccant dehumidifier able to extract up to 10 litres of moisture per day. It has all the functions you could want in a dehumidifier, like an 8-hour timer, automatic louvre and laundry function. Plus, it has an air purifier built in that helps prevent bacterial growth and improve air quality in your home, so you can breathe easy.

This DeLongi dehumidifier extracts a whopping 16 litres of moisture in a 24-hour period. It has a double filtration system, similar to our friend Breville’s dehumidifier, that gets rid of dust as well as allergens. It has the same blessed laundry function as some of the better options out there, and a water level indicator that shows just how much moisture it’s collected.

One reviewer confesses her love for said indicator, saying, ”possibly the best product I've ever purchased. The satisfaction of seeing the tank fill up and then emptying it is so far unparalleled.” Perhaps a new ASMR TikTok idea?

As hinted in the name, this dehumidifier is great for all year round. It can extract up to 50 litres of water per day (winning the capacity competition here by far), and has a gas defrost feature which helps it to work in cool temperatures as well as warm. On the larger side, this humidifier is a great option for bigger spaces such as living rooms or garages. It has a hose for continuous drainage, and an automatic shut off function, meaning less work for you. (And that’s always the goal, right?)

A two-in-one option, this baby does the job of a dehumidifier and air purifier. It can extract up to 20 litres of water from the air per day, and has an automatic shut off when capacity is reached. This works great for larger areas, like garages or wine cellars. It features a 24-hour timer, laundry function to dry your clothes quicker, and a child lock. Plus, when the humidity level you want is reached, it switches to fan-only mode, to save you energy (and money).

This Tenergy dehumidifier is perfect if you don’t have a lot of space, but need a bit more control over the humidity in your home. Measuring just over 20 by 30cm, it can be sat on the bench, in a closet or bathroom to draw out some of the stickiness. This dehumidifier has a 1 litre tank capacity, and is super quiet to operate.

It’s received a 4.4/5 star average rating from over 1,700 reviewers, and is available on Amazon.

One of the more affordable dehumidifiers on the market, Colaze’s portable option is great if you’re wanting something for the bedroom, office, caravan or just a small space. This dehumidifier collects 800 millilitres of moisture, and has an automatic shut-off function for when the water tank reaches capacity. One of the best parts about this little guy is the mute button, which immediately switches off the light, and turns the wind power to low, making it just about silent for you to sleep peacefully. Alternatively, you can use the night light function, with a range of colours to choose from. (Perfect if you have a little one who isn’t a fan of the dark.)

Colaze’s dehumidifier has received a 4.4/5 star average rating from over 2,800 reviewers, with one raving, “this little machine works like a charm! Stepping out of the shower my towel and robe are no longer damp, no more steamed up mirror (which is a plus I was not expecting) and best of all no more nasty musty smell! I would certainly recommend.”

This is a smaller, portable version of Meaco’s 20L dehumidifier. It draws out 8 litres of water from the air per day, and is super quiet. Perfect for winter, the desiccant dehumidifier is heat-generating, and shuts off automatically when capacity is reached, so you’re not using more energy than you need to be in what is already an energy-sucking season. This option ticks all the boxes in a dehumidifier, like laundry mode, a timer, and night mode. It has an average rating of 4.7/5 stars, with one reviewer saying, “I can confirm that this really works efficiently and dries laundry quickly, leaving it soft, and is economic to run. It's easy to move the DD8L around, to empty the water tank and to clean the filter, which doesn't need replacing as with refrigerant dehumidifiers.” Win win!

This dehumidifier by Eco Air comes in three colours on Amazon: blue, black, and pink, so you can fight mould in style. It can extract 7 litres of water per day, and is a desiccant dehumidifier, so great for winter. It features a laundry and economy mode, to dry your clothes quicker and save some dollars while you’re at it. Best of all, this dehumidifier takes the cake on this list for most quiet to operate, advertised as having just a 34db noise level.

This Eco Air dehumidifier has received an average of 4.7/5 stars from over 3,000 reviews, with one buyer confirming, “quite simply - they work a treat. Not only do they clear a room of damp or condensation, but they are also a very good way of drying a batch of washed clothes.”

Dehumidifiers are a great way to prevent mould, dry clothes faster, protect valuables such as books or camera equipment, and keep allergies at bay. But mould is the big kicker here. Having mould in your home can worsen allergies, asthma, cause respiratory infections, illness, and also damage your home. In some cases, it can even be potentially fatal.

Mould thrives in humidity levels above 70 per cent, and can survive in humidity levels above 50 per cent. So a good idea is to keep your house at a humidity of level of between 30–60 per cent. This is generally not too dry, but also not a mould-loving humidity fest. How to maintain this level of control? By using a dehumidifier.

There are two main types of dehumidifiers: compressor, (otherwise known as refrigerant) and desiccant dehumidifiers. For cold, rainy, miserable weather, you’ll want a desiccant dehumidifier. These draw the moisture from the air using a rotating belt of material that soaks up moisture and then is dried out, collecting the water extracted. Desiccant dehumidifiers work in the hot weather also, but compressor dehumidifiers are known to do the job better when it starts to get warm.

Compressor dehumidifiers make the air cold to extract the moisture, and then send warmer, dryer air back out. A compressor dehumidifier doesn’t work too well in the cold, as the air is already cool, making it hard to extract moisture from it, but it is by far the best performer for spring and summer months. Plus, a compressor dehumidifier is more energy efficient, costing you less dollars to keep your house dry!

If you live in typically warmer parts of Australia, like northern NSW and Queensland, leading brand Aus Climate recommend a compressor dehumidifier. This works to dry your home out in the warmer months, preparing it for rainy winters where the humidity can get locked inside when you curl up and turn the heater on.

If you’re based in a colder part of the country, such as Melbourne, you might want to invest in a desiccant dehumidifier. Because the year is generally cooler all year round, a dehumidifier that works better in the colder weather will be the best option to keep your home dry.
