WEIRTON — Seeking to alleviate a parking issue on North Main Street, the city’s Traffic Commission is recommending establishing a no-parking zone on a portion of the east side of the street.

The commission convened into a special meeting Thursday, revisiting an issue initially brought to members last week.

“We wanted to deal with this so we can get it on the city council agenda for August,” Commission Chair Romie Castelli explained.

Marvin Six, executive director of the Business Development Corp. of the Northern Panhandle, had approached the commission during its regular July 14 meeting, noting issues Bidell Gas Compression has had transporting its compressor parts off property because of large trucks, trailers and other vehicles parking on both sides of North Main Street.

“It’s pretty difficult right now for them to get some of that heavy equipment out,” Six reiterated Thursday.

A number of potholes on the street also are an issue, he noted.

Initially, through comments offered by Ward 1 Councilman Tim Connell and Ward 6 Councilman Enzo Fracasso, the commission believed North Main Street had been abandoned by the city, leaving them with no jurisdiction. During Thursday’s meeting, Connell explained research found the abandonment had been a condition of the Frontier Group of Companies moving forward with a road improvement project, including the development of a roundabout, in the area.

“The state didn’t allow it,” Connell said.

Six, members of the commission, and other city officials, agreed the decision was not aimed at making things difficult for the truck drivers who have adopted the city street as a parking area, noting they realize there is a lack of available property for them to leave their vehicles.

The additional congestion does create difficulties for others, though, especially with trucks being parked on both sides of the street and reports of an increasing number using the area.

“We all counted 12 units,” Castelli said of visits by several officials Wednesday and Thursday. “There’s a good shot, with the weekend coming, we’ll have more.”

The parking restriction, if approved by city council, will include both a yellow line and signage on the east side of North Main Street, reaching from Avenue G to the intersection with Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.
