A convicted felon was charged on Thursday in Douglas County District Court with altering the identifying marks on a 9mm handgun.

Jordan Lee Morris, 36, of Lawrence, is charged with one felony count of defacing identification marks of a firearm, one felony count of possession of a firearm by a felon and one felony count of possession of methamphetamine, according to charging documents.

In another case filed in August, he faces one count of felony theft for allegedly taking an air compressor and clothing from Orscheln Farm & Home store on June 6, 2022, according to charging documents.

Morris was arrested at the Lawrence Parole Office, 1800 E. 23rd St. on Wednesday, according to the jail booking log. Morris is on parole for felony convictions in 2018 in Douglas County for similar crimes, including possession of a firearm by a felon, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and criminal threat, according to court records.

He was sentenced to 17 months in prison with 12 months of post-release supervision in January of 2019 by Judge Paula Martin, according to court records. He also has a conviction for felony aggravated battery in 2010 in Douglas County.

During his first appearance on Thursday for the defacing a firearm charge, Assistant District Attorney Ivan Moya asked for a $20,000 cash or surety bond and said that Morris altered the gun in a way that shows he is clearly trying to evade identification by authorities and that Morris could have used the gun in a way that may harm the community.

Judge Blake Glover said that Morris already has a no-bond hold from the Kansas Department of Corrections that will keep him in jail. Glover then set a $10,000 cash or surety bond for Morris in the event that his parole officer agrees to lift the KDOC hold.

Morris is currently in custody at the Douglas County Jail and is next scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 14, for a status update.
