WEIRTON — Officials are looking at their options as a result of several tractor trailers being parked on North Main Street, causing difficulties for a nearby industry.
Marvin Six, executive director of the Business Development Corp. of the Northern Panhandle, approached the Weirton Traffic Commission Thursday, explaining Bidell Gas Compression has been challenged transporting its compressor parts off of its property along North Main Street because of approximately a dozen large trucks, trailers or other vehicles parked there, as well as the numerous potholes in the road.
“Bidell leases the property from us,” Six explained. “All of it is big items. They ship it out at all hours of the day.”
Six said it started with only a couple of trucks, but has been growing over the last year.
Traffic Commission Chair Romie Castelli noted he recently had visited the area and counted 18 vehicles parked on the street.
“It’s pretty crowded. You can’t get a wide load through,” Castelli said.
Castelli speculated the trucks belong primarily to independent contractors who previously parked elsewhere in the city, noting there were a few marked as being with the same company.
A wrench was thrown into the conversation; however, when two members of Weirton Council – Ward 1 Councilman Tim Connell and Ward 6 Councilman Enzo Fracasso – said they remembered the city had abandoned North Main Street, meaning the Traffic Commission could take no action.
Six said, if that is the case, North Main Street would be private property, with ownership split between the BDC and the Frontier Group of Companies.
City officials said they would search through municipal records to confirm the street’s status, with Six explaining if North Main Street had been abandoned, it would mean many of the side streets connecting the area to County Road would be considered dead-end roads.
Utility access agreements also would be needed, Six said.
In other business, the Traffic Commission:
Tabled a request from a Sharon Drive resident to place a yellow line across from their driveway, with commissioners saying they would speak with all residents involved before making a decision.
Approved a request from Fracasso to extend the yellow line on the West side of Bell Street by 12 feet
Agreed to place a work order with Public Works to install a warning sign in the alley between Cropper Street and Bell Street, after a resident expressed concern over the speed of vehicles.
